Ethmoid Hematoma
SIGNALMENT:
20 Year old TB Pregnant.
HISTORY:
5 month history of right sided nasal discharge (serosangenous). Has
been on a variety of antibiotics during that time with no improvement.
Owner wanted a second opinion for the etiology of the discharge.
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION:
All vitals were within normal limits. Rhinorrhea noted from the right
nare. Left nare was clean. No facial asymmetry noted. Rhinorrhea from
right nare was not fetid in odor. Mare was in excellent body score
condition 6/9.
PLAN:

Radiographs of the skull:
Radiographs revealed fluid in
the right maxillary sinuses and a mass extending from the right ethmoid turbinates.

Rhinoscopy :
DIAGNOSIS:
Ethmoid Hematoma
PLAN:
To inject the Ethmoid hematoma with 10%
buffered formalin (image below).

With the use of an injection needle the ethmoid
hematoma was penetrated and infused with 40cc of formalin until it
became turgid. The animal will be rechecked in 2 weeks and have the
procedure performed again if needed. We may have to perform this
procedure 2 to 8 times at 2 week intervals depending on the mass size.
